SALEM, MA — Crews worked throughout the night in Salem to restore water service after a malfunction at the Highland Avenue pumping station on Thursday.

The Salem Department of Public Services said on Friday morning that crews had completed a temporary repair early in the morning that should restore service to affected businesses and residents. The temporary repair will be in place throughout the weekend and permanent repairs will be made over the next couple of weeks.

The city said water pressure and flow may not be restored to normal service levels until the permanent repair is in place. Permanent repairs may take up to two weeks to complete.

Residents in the area were advised to use bottled water for drinking on Thursday night and offered shower facilities at the Salem YMCA if needed.

Any resident experiencing discolored water was advised to run the cold water faucet until it clears.

Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll said a "blown flange" caused water to flood the pump station on Thursday.

She commended the work of crews who spent hours working on the restoration.

Those with questions or a "leaking meter" were advised to call the Department of Public Services at 978-744-3302.
