Shortly after announcing the Mercedes-AMG GLE “Edition 55” for the US, the Affalterbach brand revealed the EU-spec model which comes in six flavors instead of four.

The special edition is based on the GLE 53, the GLE 63, and the flagship GLE 63 S, available in regular and coupe-SUV bodystyles. All of them get special trim options and more standard equipment, just like the models for the US market which, however, didn’t get the GLE 63.

Starting with the exterior, the GLE “Edition 55” models are painted in either obsidian black metallic or Manufaktur diamond white bright shade, featuring special stickers on the profile. The AMG Night Package comes standard, bringing high-gloss black accents (front splitter, front apron, mirror caps, window surround, rear apron, etc.), with the tinted windows, the silver chrome filler cap, and the black chrome tailpipes rounding off the looks. The SUVs sit on 22-inch forged AMG wheels featuring a cross-spoke design finished in matte tantalum gray with a high-sheen rim flange and “Edition 55” hub covers.

Getting inside the cabin you are greeted by illuminated door sills made of stainless steel before you step on the black AMG velour floor mats with contrasting stitching and woven “Edition 55” lettering in red. The AMG seats with Nappa leather combine red pepper and black shades, while there is the option of the same Nappa leather upholstery to be used on the door panels and center console. Other details include the carbon matte black accents on the dashboard, the AMG Performance steering wheel in Dinamica microfiber, and plenty of AMG and “55” badges as a nod to the anniversary of the Affalterbach brand. Finally, a special AMG Indoor Car Cover will keep your “Edition 55” dust-free during storage.

There are no mechanical changes on the “Edition 55” models. This means that the GLE 53 is fitted with the turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine producing 429 hp (320 kW / 435 PS), the GLE 63 gets the more powerful biturbo 4.0-liter V8 producing 563 hp (420 kW / 571 PS), while the GLE 63 S sits at the top of the food chain with 603 hp (450 kW / 612 PS) from the V8. All models gain an extra 21 hp (16 kW / 22 hp) from the mild-hybrid system and benefit from the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G gearbox and the 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system.

The Mercedes-AMG GLE “Edition 55” is already available to order in Europe and will remain so until December 2022. The company didn’t specify production numbers so we guess that Europeans will get more than the 55 units of each model that the Americans get. Depending on the variant, the “Edition 55” models add a premium between €5,950 ($6,288) and €13,090 ($13,833) to the price of the stock AMG-branded SUVs.

With the “Edition 55” series, AMG is celebrating its 55th anniversary. Notably, the models of choice are all the ones that are getting a facelift soon – namely the G63, the A-Class, the CLA, and now the GLE and GLE Coupé.
